Digital twins for fragile manuscripts: multispectral layers, binding stress maps, and annotation-ready scans.

Are full-resolution stacks available?
No full-resolution spectral stacks are distributed by this page. Follow the holding institution's access and reuse terms for each manuscript.
How to use in class?
Use folio packs with guided questions; pair with audio clips in Audio Guides.
Restoration rehearsal?
Digital models can support discussion, but treatment decisions require examination, material testing, provenance, and a qualified conservator.
Multispectral imaging records the same surface under selected wavelength bands. Processing can increase contrast between materials, but a bright or dark feature is not automatically a recovered letter or a specific pigment. Interpretation should preserve the original band files, calibration information, processing steps, and the distinction between observation and reading.
Claims and access language reviewed 9 October 2026. This page provides a reading framework, not manuscript attribution or conservation advice.

| Observe | Describe material, form, marks, wear or spatial relation without assigning identity or purpose. Begin with “Methods.” |
|---|---|
| Context | Locate the record in excavation, collection, restoration and display history. Check the chain against Library of Congress: Multispectral Imaging and Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute: Multispectral Imaging. |
| Infer | Digital reconstruction should mark what is directly recorded, what is restored from comparison and what is an interpretive choice. Tie every attribution to the feature that supports it and retain competing readings. |
| Withhold | Do not extend “Comparative” beyond the date, sample, comparison or provenance actually documented. |
List each custody or documentation gap separately; an unknown interval is evidence about the record, not permission to invent continuity.
