How to read a heritage place

Separate original location, present stewardship, visible fabric and documented movement before interpreting a heritage place.

Reviewed 9 October 2026 · Exercise record accessed 8 October 2026

1. Establish two locations

Open the ArtifactView place record and the direct Metropolitan Museum of Art record. Record “Dendur, Nubia” as the original place named in the record and The Met in New York as the present steward and display setting. These labels answer different questions.

2. Separate ancient fabric from display context

In the supplied views, identify the gateway and temple proper. Record the pool, glass wall and gallery volume as features of the current museum installation. A present-day photograph does not by itself reconstruct the original landscape, orientation or route of approach.

3. Build a source-bounded timeline

Use only dated statements supported by the selected institution record: completion by 10 CE, gift to the United States in 1965 and award to The Met in 1967. Label the many unrepresented stages as gaps. A fuller movement or conservation history requires additional archival and conservation sources.

4. Build the place evidence card

Place: Temple of Dendur
Original location: [recorded place]
Present steward: [institution]
I can see: [one structural observation]
The dated record supports: [one change]
Still needed: [map, plan, archive or conservation source]
Source: [direct institution URL and access date]

Quality check

A strong card never treats the current gallery as the ancient landscape. It distinguishes a recorded transfer date from the physical steps of dismantling, transport, conservation and reassembly that the selected source may not describe.

How to read a heritage place

Separate original location, present stewardship, visible fabric and documented movement before interpreting a heritage place.

Evidence register
ObserveDescribe material, form, marks, wear or spatial relation without assigning identity or purpose. Begin with “1. Establish two locations.”
ContextLocate the record in excavation, collection, restoration and display history. Check the chain against direct Metropolitan Museum of Art record.
InferBegin with observable features, connect each inference to a source, and mark the point where evidence gives way to a plausible but revisable interpretation. Tie every attribution to the feature that supports it and retain competing readings.
WithholdDo not extend “2. Separate ancient fabric from display context” beyond the date, sample, comparison or provenance actually documented.

Provenance checkpoint

List each custody or documentation gap separately; an unknown interval is evidence about the record, not permission to invent continuity.

Catalogue note

Open the ArtifactView place record and the direct Metropolitan Museum of Art record . Record “Dendur, Nubia” as the original place named in the record and The Met in New York as the present steward and display. Mark later repairs, labels and digital reconstructions as later interventions rather than original features.
